The Bendigo Art Gallery in Australia

The Bendigo Art Gallery is the largest and most important regional museum in Australia and it went through a 8.5 million dollar refurbishment done by the practice of Fender Katsalidis Architects to add a new contemporary wing of galleries at the edge of the Rosalind Park.

The redevelopment was inaugurated in March 2014 with the first feature of the new wing being The Body Beautiful in Ancient Greece. The extension added 600 square meters of gallery space and a specialist storage area to host the collection of the museum which has almost 5000 objects.

Aside from the galleries there is a larger Gallery Café and the interior was designed to be more efficient. The internal galleries are white boxes and the new pavilion gallery has a steel exterior to bring a strong contrast to the other volumes made of recycled timber or rust-toned Corten steel. The main focus of the art gallery is to display 19th century European and Australian art in the shape of paintings, sculptures, ceramics, decorative arts or photography.
