4 Reasons Why Efficient Eavestroughs and Downspouts Are Crucial

Heavy rainfall in Toronto keeps the city green and the flowers blooming, but it can also damage your home. A mere inch of rainfall on a 2,000-square-foot house translates to a deluge of 1,200 gallons of water on the roof.

If the precipitation is not properly diverted by the eavestroughs and downspouts, the water can severely damage a home. Most homes don't have a complete, properly installed diversion system, which means that many homes are at high risk for roof leaks, foundation cracks, and interior damage. This article will detail several methods of protecting your home by ensuring that your roof, and especially your drainage network, are performing efficiently.

Check your gutter system to see if it needs repair or updating. The diversion system should be securely fastened to the roof's fascia with downspouts that securely fasten to the home's exterior. The system should be equipped with seamless gutters on each sloped roof edge with water flowing through the gutters with no spots of standing water and no leaks. Downspouts need to have the correct pitch coming off of the roof and slope so that the water moves quickly and efficiently away from the structure.

If the system doesn't meet these standards, four problems may arise that need to be dealt with swiftly and efficiently:

1. Water falling directly down puts pressure on the home's foundation, resulting in water seepage in the basement, crawlspace, or — in structures without either of these — seepage directly into the home's living areas. This also can inflict significant damage to the home's siding.

2. Rainwater can also cause damage by seeping through the roof via the soffit and eaves. This causes water damage in the attic, interior and exterior walls, including wood rot, mould, and mildew. In cold weather climates, the water freezes causing wood expansion which leads to structural damage. The contraction when the weather warms has the potential to cause additional damage.

3. Inefficient eavestroughs and downspouts also lead to improperly channeled runoff that causes yard erosion when rainwater rushes down the roof slopes, hitting the yard with excruciating force — instead of gutters around the roof, you'll find gutters in your yard after the rain. Water pooled at or near your home's foundation can also damage the roots of shrubs, trees and garden plants that you have carefully planted and tended to.

4. The excess water can also damage the masonry on and around the home. Excess water flow stains brick and stone masonry and also causes cracking and settling of driveways, patios, and sidewalks in extreme situations.

You can easily avoid these potential damages to your home by calling Professional Roofers to have the gutter system on your home checked out. Ensure your roofers use high quality materials that last. Regularly clean your gutters and keep them in top shape after the repairs to keep your home safe from water damage from heavy rainfall in Toronto. We've seen a huge amount of rain already this spring, so if you haven't thought about getting your roof checked out, now might be the time before we receive another massive hit of precipitation.
