Creative Ways to Downsize from a House to an Apartment

Moving home is enough hassle without having to move to a smaller place. But often you choose to downsize to a smaller home, or you're forced to due to circumstance.

Whether you want to have less space or not, you're faced with the task of fitting the possessions from your larger home into a small one. It's especially hard when you were in a house, but now you'll be living in an apartment. But don't worry about the move, because you can make it work with careful planning. Make the downsize from a house to an apartment easier with these useful tips.

Declutter

The first thing you can do if get rid of everything you don't want or need. You'll find that you've collected a lot of stuff that shouldn't come with you, no matter how big your new home is. You can end up with a lot of junk and things you no longer want from one move to the next. So don't make the mistake of carting it around with you. Go through every room, and especially anywhere you use as storage, to decide what to keep and what to get rid of. You don't have to throw it all away. You could recycle some items, give them away to charity or sell them to raise some cash for moving.

Measure and Create Room Plans

Before moving into the new home, measure how much space you have in each room. You can create a floor plan and make to-scale models of your furniture. Doing this will help you decide what to keep and where to put it. There's no point taking your bed to the new apartment, only to realize it doesn't fit in your bedroom. Once you've made your choices of what's coming with you, you can decide what to do with everything else.

Use Storage Space

You might be reluctant to sell or recycle the furniture and other items you've decided not to take with you. If you need more time to decide or perhaps you want to experiment with different pieces, look for a moving company that has storage space. As well as helping you to move, they can keep some of your things while you decide what to do with them. You might also want to keep some important things in storage long-term. Perhaps you have files you don't have room for in the new apartment or a valuable possession that you want to keep until you can move again.

Consider Starting Again

If rearranging your furniture to fit into an apartment is proving difficult, you might want to start again. Instead of trying to fit some of your current furniture into the new place, get rid of all of it and furnish the apartment from scratch. You might feel much more comfortable when you're no longer trying to shoehorn furniture that doesn't fit in size or style. Make a fresh start instead, and have fun decorating with no restrictions.

Downsizing to a smaller home isn't easy, but sometimes it's better for you and your family. Keep your move organized from the start to make it successful.
