Easy Ways to Get Stunning & Unique Furniture For Your Home

Regardless of how much money you have, there are always ways to kit out your home in stunning furniture that your friends, relatives and visitors won't see anywhere else.

All it takes is a little work on your part, and you can make your living space sing with your own personality. Let's take a look at some of the simple ways you can get started.

Be A Scavenger

You never know what you might find while out on a walk or a traipse through a forest. If you want to bring genuinely unique pieces into your home, then you should always be on the lookout. Found an enormous piece of wood? If it has the right shape, it could make an ideal mantlepiece for your fireplace, or an attractive shelf. Even twigs and sticks can be picked up, brought home, and used to construct funky looking picture frames. Beautiful stones and pebbles can be stored in a glass jar, and you could even strike it lucky on a beach with washed up old tins or bottles. They're perfect for a quick clean up and then used as fantastic little ornaments.

Paint Things

Are you bored of your furniture? If so why not get some paint out and give your tables, chairs and anything else you want a refreshing lick of paint. There’s no need to splurge on a new set of furniture if all it takes is a lick of paint. The costs are minimal, so give it a go before consigning your current pieces to your local charity store. Speaking of which…

Upcycle

Charity shops and rubbish tips are full of old furniture that you just won’t see anywhere else. With a keen eye, you will be able to spot some potential in some of those old pieces that others have deemed unworthy. And it doesn’t take much to make something old look new again - other than a bit of elbow grease. Use sandpaper to smooth out any roughness, and then varnish, paint or just leave as is. You could also think about going down the shabby chic route. We’d recommend Farrow & Ball paint, seal it with wax, and distress with some wire wool.

Build Your Own

How are your DIY skills? If you have some time on your hands, then why not try making your own furniture? It’s best to start as small as possible - shelves are a good starting point to get used to measurements and accurate cutting. One thing to bear in mind is that as you progress your DIY skills, you may need to invest in extra tools. An average saw is OK for cutting straight edges. However, by the time you start making curvier furniture like chairs or table legs, you could benefit from something more suitable. We’re big fans of angle grinders to speed things up a little - this Makita DGA452 is fairly inexpensive and can do an excellent job for you. Once you have your tools in place, you will be ready to go DIY crazy. Take a look at some of our ideas for beginners that will help you get started.

There's no need to spend a lot of money on materials or expensive pieces of furniture. There’s so much out there you can make use of already - so don’t be afraid of experimenting.
