Making Your Home Wheelchair Accessible The Easy Way

It isn't easy when you or someone that you live with relies on a wheelchair to get around. You might have been thinking of making modifications to your home.

The actual design of the wheelchair modifications is an involved process. but there are some things that you can do to save time by making some adjustments.

The main thing is to keep in mind, are the things that you can do to promote safe, independent living. and make a living space that is easy to move around in.

The entrance to your home. The first that you will want to look at is the entrance. Building a wheelchair ramp for each entry door for the house can vary in costs. When designing your ramp, make sure that it is wide enough and think about handrails, non slip surfaces and also a cover.

The Stairs. Navigating stairs can be a tricky affair for anybody in a wheelchair, not to mention a potentially frightening experience. To make things easier consider a stair lift for either the person, or the chair. You will likely need one for every stairway. A stair lift will give full accessibility and help instill greater feelings of independence.

Floors. These can also pose a problem if not addressed correctly. Tiles and laminate flooring is the ideal surface, but a good quality low pile carpet can work too. Small rubber ramps over thresholds can make a big difference too, and make sure that cables and wires are.

There are lots of useful websites to get suggestions for making your floors more wheelchair friendly.

You can find lots of useful that can provide further suggestions for making your floors more wheelchair friendly.

Doorways. Probably the hardest part of getting around a home in a wheelchair is doorways. Widening the door frames can provide a much more pleasant, safe environment for you and your loved one - whichever one of you requires the wheelchair access. Some quick easy ways of doing this is to remove the frames, remove the doors or just change the way the door opens. Either one of these things will instantly turn the door in a more approachable entry for the wheelchair.

Lower door knobs. By lowering door knobs, you make the life of a wheelchair user much simpler. and you can even install automatic door openers instead if you prefer. You should also keep in mind the bathroom while you are lowering the knobs. since this is one of the more dangerous rooms for those in a wheelchair.

It can also be a good idea to small things things like temperature control units, safety rails and a swivelling chair for a shower cubicle. There are also lots of different things that you can do in the kitchen too, such as lowering counters and installing kitchen appliances that are easier to reach.

It is also an option to install a sink that a wheelchair can get under, and lower controls and sockets and also rocker switches are better for lighting.

Replace all of your corded telephones with cordless handsets instead. This will help make life a whole lot easier for anybody restricted to sitting in a wheelchair.

Have a good think about how someone would live in the home, if they were in a wheelchair. You may that inspiration comes a little easier than you might think.
