Our Household Furniture Explained

Furniture can make or break a home, so I think it’s important to get it right! Here’s our home’s furniture explained to you in detail.

The Kitchen

If you ask me, the kitchen has to be the hub of the house. It’s where we all spend time together at the beginning of the day when we eat breakfast, and it’s where we eat as a family in the evening. That's why I see it as the most vital room in the house to get right. We have quite a large table, but we didn’t buy it from brand new. It was used, but it’s in great condition because it’s so big and sturdy.

We finished off the table by adding a table cloth. This ties into the overall style and decoration of the kitchen, but it’s not all about style. It’s also about function too. I don’t want to see tea stains on the table, so the cloth looks great and protects it at the same time. It has a double function. All the cupboards are wooden with some frosted glass ones along the top, giving the room a fresh, modern feel.

Bathroom

In our family, it’s essential to have both a bathtub and a shower. We wouldn’t be able to cope with one or the other, we need both. I like to use the bathtub, but my partner prefers the shower, so when it came to fitting out the new bathroom, it made sense to have both options. It gives us choice and variety too. And if your bathroom has the space to accommodate both, it’s usually the best route to take.

The bathtub is standalone because I think these look a lot better than ones that slot into the corner of the room. Yes, it was a little more costly, but it was definitely worth it. The shower is in the corner of the room out of the way. There’s nothing particularly fancy about it, but it works well. I also have an old wooden chair in the corner of the room on which I store fresh towels.

Master Bedroom

The main feature of any master bedroom is, of course, the bed itself. So, let’s where we’ll begin. Our bed is actually modified. It’s a pretty ordinary bed from a shop, but it was bought a while ago. So, what we did to improve the way it looked was to change how the headboard looked. We added some padding to it and upholstered it with a great patterned cloth. All we needed was the cheap padding and fabric, bulk adhesive and a nail gun.

By the time the job was done, the bed looked better than it had looked since we first bought the bed. It gave it a new lease of life and made the entire bedroom look a lot better in the process. I’d recommend you do the same if you want to give your bed a new look without having to buy a new one. The rest of the furniture in the room, like the chest of drawers and the wardrobe, were bought from a furniture store at pretty low prices.

Kids Bedroom

Our two children each have a bedroom of their own, and we spent a lot of time making sure they looked just right. It was a long and expensive process! But it’s something that all parents have to get right. And if you don’t, you’ll have to face an angry child telling you what’s wrong with it! So, all in all, I’m glad we put the effort into the rooms. When they’re small, they’re not bothered about things like decoration, but that soon changes!

We have a boy and a girl, but we tried not to be completely conventional when it came to coming up with decorative ideas. We chose themes that were quite simple so that they will be adaptable as the kids grow up. But they are very colourful and bright as all kids bedrooms should be. You don’t want to make them dull and boring!

Living Room

When it came to decorating the living room, we put the focus on comfort and relaxation. It’s a child-friendly room, but it isn’t a room designed for children. This was important for me because I felt like the room should be somewhere for the adults to relax after a long day at work or looking after the children. That means we splashed out on a comfortable sofa that prioritises comfort above style. That’s not to say it doesn’t look great too though!

We love our music and movies in our house too, and those things demand a lot of storage space. We have quite a large cabinet that houses all of our CDs and DVDs. We have to have enough space for all the things that we like, as well as the vast amount of kids DVDs and TV shows that we've amassed over the last few years!

Outside

Finding the right furniture for your home isn’t just about what you have on the inside; your outdoor furniture is just as important. You might not feel this way in the winter months, but when the summer arrives, you’ll want to spend as much of your time as possible outside with the family. A big table and comfortable chairs to relax in are a must. You’ll also need plenty of games and activities for the kids to have fun with in the summer.

We bought an outdoor furniture set from a local shop and had it delivered. It was on offer, so the price was very fair. It didn’t take us long to set up when it arrived either. I’d recommend you waiting for the weeks leading up to summer before you buy outdoor furniture because that’s when you can find the best bargains. We also bought a miniature climbing frame. It’s great for small children, allowing them to have some fun in complete safety.

This is pretty much all of our household furniture explained to you, so, hopefully, it’s given you some ideas!
