Planning the Perfect outside Space

Planning the Perfect outside Space

Increasingly people are spending more time living outside. They are taking advantage of the availability of low cost lighting, hot tubs, and gas heating to spend more time enjoying their outdoor space. Many people now use their garden area or patio as an extra room and with a little planning you can too.

A firm flooring area

To get the most out of your outdoor space and transform it into an area where you can relax and entertain friends and family you need to start with a firm base. Grass looks nice, but for much of the year it will be too damp or water logged to withstand your walking on it every day.

The best approach is to lay out an area of hard standing or decking. Before you do this, you need to sort out any land drainage issues you have to make sure that the flooring remains flat and usable.

Lighting

The next element you need to sort out is lighting. If you want to get the most out of your outdoor space, installing good quality lighting will really help.

You want to light up your outdoor space without disturbing your neighbours, so low level lighting is usually the best option. If you need a bright light to read by you can always set up additional lighting at a lower level. That way you get the light levels, you need without encroaching on your neighbours.

Heat and cooling

If you plan to use your outdoor space during the winter, you will want some form of heater. A gas heater is a simple answer, but fire pits are great too. In very hot places, installing a misting system will enable you to enjoy your outdoor spaces for more of the year.

A hot tub is a great addition to your outdoor space. They enable you to spend time outside reading and enjoying a drink even on cool evenings. Many modern spas can also be used in cool mode during the summer.

Entertainment

It is not possible to buy outdoor TVs that allow you to enjoy a movie or play a video game outside. Again, you need to think about your neighbours when choosing where to locate it and follow the advice about locating it so that you can see it even on bright days.

Somewhere to cook and eat

Being able to cook and eat outside is great. The garden is always a good place for a party.

Locating your eating area relatively close to the cooking area is a good idea. It means that the cook can still socialise with the family or the guests. However, you do need to think about safety. You want to reduce the risks as much as possible and think about how to keep the children away from the dangers of the cooking area.

Most of the time it will be just you and the family sitting down to eat, but it is nice to have space to invite friends around. Try to bear that in mind when planning your outdoor eating area.

Take your time and do a bit of research and you will get the most out of your outdoor spaces.
