Selling Your Home? Increase the Curb Appeal!

First impressions are very important when you are trying to sell your house, and that usually means the "curb appeal". Without breaking the budget, there are several ways to improve the outside look of your home, and hopefully boost the value.

Siding or Claddding

If you don't mind a little more construction, changing the siding on your house can really improve its look and add some fresh curb appeal. Siding, also known as cladding, is just the outside layer and can be removed and replaced without a huge amount of renovation work.

There are different kinds of cladding for houses, and you may have a whole range of options and colors to choose from. The main materials are vinyl or wood for siding but you can also splurge a little and go for something like stone or brick. It can make a home look brand new, especially if the existing cladding is not in good shape or in an outdated color scheme.

Unlike the other suggestions coming, this may not be a DIY kind of job but it isn't that costly either.

Landscaping

The landscaping outside of your home is one of the most budget-friendly places where you can improve your look. You can keep it simple with a few colorful flowers in nice pots, or spend a little more to build stone lines gardens and maybe even a little water feature. At the very least, keep the lawn mowed and the garden areas free of weeds and clutter.

One catch with new landscaping is that if you create something too large or too elaborate (like a huge koi pond, for example), it can actually detract from your home's appeal because people will see it as difficult or expensive to maintain. Keep it easy to manage as well as looking good when you add new features.

Window Treatments

You can see your window treatments from the outside, and they certainly contribute to the overall look of the house from the curb. Replacing uneven or broken blinds, tattered curtains or any furniture or junk that is just blocking the view through the window. Bare windows are better than poorly covered ones, but even an inexpensive set of curtains will do wonders.

Paint the Front Door

Once a potential buyer is at your doorstep, your front door is the first thing they will see up close. Whether your door is wood or metal, you can very easily give it a fresh coat of paint. Some new hardware or house numbers added will improve the look even further. If you don't mind painting, this tip can extend out to the garage door too.

Fix Your Fixtures

Light fixtures that have broken glass in them or burned out bulbs are not going to look great to a visitor. Get them replaced and repaired right away. A little paint can make older fixtures look newer at next to no cost, and a little wipe with glass cleaner can make them sparkle.

Get Rid of the Clutter

Even though clutter isn't really part of your house, people still see it and it gives a bad impression. Bicycles, garbage cans, outside toys, and garden tools should all be tucked away in a shed or garage. If you don't have an outside space for them, you may have to settle for bringing your stuff indoors to keep the yard looking clean and clutter-free.
