Things You Must Do Before Moving Into Your New Home

Moving into your new home can be stressful. There’s so much to remember; you need to sign tons of documents, pay out lots of money, and remember all of your stuff.

But this post is going to concentrate on things you should do once you’ve handed over keys, before you physically start living in your new home. Hopefully, it’ll help you feel a little less stressed!

Clean it All Up

Many homeowners won’t do this for you, so it’s up to you to do it yourself. If you don’t bother cleaning it up before you move in, then you can’t expect the house to feel like yours. Get rid of anything you don’t want and anything that the previous owners left. If you think it’s something they might still want, you can always contact them or the estate agents to hand it back.

Paint it Neutral

Giving the walls a fresh coat of neutral paint will always spruce the place up and give it a new lease of life. Neutral colors go with everything and make the house look bigger. You don’t have to keep the walls neutral forever; it just helps, especially if you don’t know what you’re going to do with each room yet.

Change the Locks

Take a second to consider the amount of people who could have a key to your place. Estate agents, the old owners, relatives of the old owners....you get the pictures. Changing the locks will help your home to feel much safer and more like it belongs to you. It shouldn’t be difficult to find a local locksmith in your area, you can usually search Google or the yellow pages. Your friends might be able to recommend one too!

Protect Your Privacy

Take a look at your window coverings and see if they could do with an update. The old owners may have taken theirs with them, in which case you’ll definitely need to invest in curtains or blinds to protect your privacy.

Insure it

You can’t be too cautious these days, so insure your new home before you move in to make sure you protect your investment.

Inform Bank and Re-direct Mail

For a while you’ll still have to contact the owners of your old home to pick up mail, but it hopefully won’t be as stressful if you inform companies ASAP.

Move Over TV and Broadband

Moving over your TV and broadband will make your transition a lot more pleasant. Some people need the internet to get work finished and other important tasks, while having the TV there will make things more enjoyable. See if you can switch over your package/license by contacting your supplier.

Update Other Essential Information

You may need to update your address on your driving license and other important documents. Do this as soon as possible so it doesn’t slip your mind!

Once you’ve done everything in this post, you can safely move into your new home. It should feel like yours too!

Happy moving day!
