What You Need to Know About Hiring Tradesmen

Hiring tradesmen to carry out work on your home is a big step. There are many things that can go wrong if you fail to hire the right people. So, here are some things that you should do before you hire.

Get References

The best way to find tradespeople for your home is to talk to your friends and family members and ask for recommendations. This allows you to hire people with the knowledge that they have been used and approved of by someone you trust. If this is not possible though, you should ask for references from the company that you’re using. Most companies can show references from past clients. And they can usually also show you photographic evidence of past work they’ve done.

1

Check Out Their Website

The great thing about hiring tradespeople for your home these days is that you can check out the company’s website first. The style and nature of a company’s website can say a lot about a business. If it is shoddy and poor, you should think twice about hiring that company. But if the website looks professional, maintained and informative, you know that the website is of a slightly higher standard. So, always check out the website before you take any further steps.

Get a Quote First

Before you agree to hire a tradesman or a team of them, you should get a quote first. Ideally, you should get a quote from various different companies and compare them. This will allow you to make sure that you’re getting the best possible deal. Nobody wants to pay more money than they have to, so don’t make the mistake of taking the first offer that comes your way. If you have multiples quotes, you might be able to haggle for a better deal. Never sign a deal without seeing a price quote though.

Check Their Trade Association Membership

All the best businesses that have nothing to hide should have association memberships. All the big trade industries have their own associations. They give their approval to certain companies that meet industry standards. In most industries, it’s pretty much vital to be a part of these trade associations. Companies that don’t have these memberships should always raise your suspicions. There must be a particular reason why they don’t have a membership, and you should try to get to the bottom of what those reasons are. And always hire licensed electricians, as this kind of task can be dangerous.

2

Ask if They’re Insured

Insurance is important when someone is coming into your home to carry out major work. You don’t want them to do something that might cause damage to your home if they don’t have insurance. Well, you don’t want them to do damage to your home even if they do have it. But at least if they have insurance, they can afford to pay for (or carry out) any repairs that later need to be done. If you find out that they don’t have the right insurance cover, you should not hire them.
